Modified Bitumen Systems

What you need to know
Modified Bitumen or Mod Bit for short is produced from a modified asphalt combination. These systems are either SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) which is a rubber modifier designed for elongation and recovery properties or APP (Atactic Polypropylene) with a plastic modifier to provide a tougher better weather-resistant blend. Modified Bitumen systems are commonly applied in multiple layers or multi-ply roof assemblies. New construction, potentially certain existing assembly restorative recovery, and re-roof replacement applications are considered a good fit for these systems. The attachment applications for these assemblies include adhered with cold process adhesive, hot asphalt adhesive, torch applied, and self-adhered roofing technology. Hybrid systems utilizing smooth modified bitumen products with fiberglass inner plies are available. Other potential hybrids with single plies such as TPO, EPDM, and PVC fleece-backs as surfacing are also available.
